About Mammoth Underground
The Mammoth Underground mine is set to be re-born. Originally mined on its surface over a century ago, the Mammoth Seam now flexes and pivots into a world-class underground Bord and Pillar Operation.
This mine symbolises the mammoth, a majestic and powerful creature, representing strength and endurance, and an ability to thrive in challenging environments; all traits that are required to successfully operate underground. Just like the mammoth, our team will be resilient, capable of overcoming obstacles and enduring through the toughest conditions when presented. Our Mammoth team is being built on mutual support, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose. These behaviours will underpin and bring to life the Coronado CARE values that will form the foundation of how the mammoth team will operate. Our teams will be more than just groups of individuals; they will be cohesive units working seamlessly together.
Our Underground team is approaching the Bord and Pillar operation with a commitment to excellence in all aspects of mining, and through our people, will deliver a benchmark operation underpinned by the highest standards of safety, productivity, sustainability, and innovation. We will approach every challenge with determination, clarity, alignment, and resilience, always mindful of our impact on the community, environment, and our responsibility towards future generations in the Blackwater region and surrounds
Mammoth Underground
Located in the Bowen Basin, approximately 10 km north of Blackwater in central Queensland, the Mammoth Seam, first discovered, named, and mined underground in the early 1900s has since remained untouched in its underground capacity. The Mammoth Underground Mine has been identified as a significant extension opportunity for the Curragh complex and is in line with Coronado’s strategy for organic growth and being a global leader in supplying the world with steel-making coal.
This will be a world-class Bord and Pillar mine, re-vitalising this traditional mining methodology through Central Queensland. Already a thriving mining community, this operation will continue to contribute to the social infrastructure in Blackwater and beyond.
The Mammoth Underground Mine will produce a variety of high-quality low-ash metallurgical coal products which will be exported globally to a diverse customer base of leading steelmakers.
